Maple Brook Alpacas brings an ancient Incan royal fiber into your closet. Robin and her husband Mike Tierney established the Maple Brook Alpaca Farm in 1993, the first alpaca farm in Massachusetts. Mike’s interest in alpacas was sparked by an article he read in USA Today. He attended a sale in Michigan of the first alpacas to be imported from Peru, and the rest is history. The Tierneys’ farm in Westfield became a breeding farm filled with champion quality alpacas that they bred, raised, and sold all over the country. They carefully went from a herd of 7 to 300 elite alpacas. Their breeding program was built on superior genetics, and their alpacas produced the highest quality fiber.
Alpacas have been domesticated for over 5,000 years. They were once a cherished treasure of the ancient Inca civilization, their fiber considered only worthy of royalty. Now, their popularity is internationally recognized, and their fiber is available to the masses. It’s as soft as cashmere, and it’s warmer, lighter, and stronger than sheep’s wool. While the Tierneys sold their alpacas in 2007, you can still buy apparel and accessories from some of their best alpacas. They have alpaca clothing you can’t find anywhere else, and hand-knit products made by Robin herself.
